Despite the high seismic hazard in the western part of Bolivia, most of the population is located in the central part of the country, where the seismic hazard is significantly lower. The majority of the building stock is composed of non-engineered structures, which can be considerably vulnerable to earthquakes. In June 1994 a magnitude 8.4 (Mw) earthquake occurred at a depth of 650 km in the northwest part of the country causing five fatalities. In 1998, another event with a moderate magnitude (6.6 Mw) caused 95 fatalities and more than 5000 homeless.
