Tanzania is located in the East African Rift Valley and damaging earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 6 occur almost annually in the East African Rift. Since 1900 to date, five earthquakes measuring Mw 7 and above have occurred in eastern Africa. The East African Rift System is the most active within all of Sub Saharan Africa and has been the major cause of several destructive earthquakes in this region. The Bukoba Mw 5.9 earthquake on 10th September 2016 occurred in Northwest Tanzania. This caused numerous fatalities and over 200 injuries. Destruction was not confined to Tanzania alone, but spread across the Northern border to neighbouring Uganda were several buildings collapsed.
